Abergele cycling tragedy: where’s the blame lie?

Back in January, four members of Rhyl Cycling Club in North Wales died when a car skidded into them. The accident shocked the cycling community across Britain.

In one of my first posts in this blog, I said it appeared a terrible but genuine accident. Months later, the driver, Robert Harris, was charged with driving with defective tyres. Yesterday, Mr Harris was fined £180.

The families of the victims have criticised the fine as too lenient.

Have they got a point? The magistrates said that the condition of the tyres was not a factor in the tragedy. If that’s true, Mr Harris should not be fined more than any other motorist who drives around with defective tyres. He’s still living with the shock of that awful Sunday morning – as are the families and friends who still mourn the Rhyl Four.
