Accrington Stanley: 2006, 1962 and all that

They’re back.

Accrington Stanley will be playing league football in 2006, 44 years after crashing out of the Football League after gathering debts of £40,000 – big money in the year the Beatles became famous. The club has won promotion to League Two from the Nationwide Conference after beating Woking 1-0.

Accrington FC was one of the founder members of the League in 1888. But after they left the Football League in 1962, they became a by-word for failure. An Eighties ad for milk taunted a soccer hopeful that he might be good only for Stanley. In 2006, that might be an ambition, not a taunt.
