Longing for failure

Queen Victoria was adamant: "We are not interested in the possibilities of failure – they do not exist".

The Empress Queen wouldn’t have lasted a day as a Daily Mail journalist. Britain’s most successful middle-market tabloid longs for failure.

Saturday’s front page screamed out: "Chip and PIN chaos this week".

The story about the move to tighten credit and debit card security left the Mail’s ever-fearful readers in no doubt that skies would darken and civilisation come to an end. "Business leaders and consumer groups fear the switch will be a shambles."

I can make a more reliable prediction. You won’t find any stories in the Daily Mail this week explaining why its doom-laden soothsaying proved a nonsense. Queen Victoria would have sneered at the paper’s fear of change.
