I cancelled our Sky TV subscription yesterday after four years. That’s £45 a month saved!

The move was prompted by the arrival 12 weeks ago of our baby son, Owen. I’d much rather spend Sunday afternoons taking Owen for a walk in the country than watching 22 grossly overpaid men kicking a football around. But all the talk of the credit crunch and recession prompted me to see how we could save money. I’m now enjoying homemade salads – another £50 or so saved.

I can’t help thinking that Sky will be badly affected by economic troubles. When we signed up, Freeview was just getting underway. Now, it gives us most of the channels we paid extra to watch on Sky, apart from Sport and Movies. Premier League football has left me cold this season, as the sport has descended further into financial and moral insanity. Manchester City – bought by trillionaires and bankrolled to buy success. West Ham – found guilty of repeated lies over the Tevez transfer. Tottenham – bottom of the league a year after manager Martin Jol was disgracefully sacked for only reaching four in the league,. Newcastle – the usual farce.

It’s ironic that football is more financially profligate than ever just as many of its sponsors are going bust, such as Manchester United shirt sponsor AIG. I can’t help hoping the days of plenty for English clubs will soon be over. The game will be much better for it.
