I missed out on Cardiff City’s European glory days.
A struggling (old) second division club managed to beat Real Madrid and Torpedo Moscow in the European Cup Winners Cup. It came within a whisker of winning the 1968 semi final against Hamburg. By the time I was old enough to go to night games in the 1970s, the tide had turned. (I envied my friend Anthony, who saw City in European action.) In time, the Bluebirds weren’t even strong enough to win the Welsh Cup – passport to Europe.
A decade ago, it became academic, as UEFA ruled that only clubs playing within the territory of their national football association could represent their country in European competitions. As Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham play in the English league, they’ve been out of Europe since 1995.
Today’s Guardian reports that the Football Association of Wales is to ask Uefa to reconsider the rule. The timing is perfect, as City are enjoying their best season since the early days of the Beatles.
