Roy Greenslade’s blog about the media on Guardian Unlimited is always good value. Today, he highlights a Reading Evening Post story about the closure of a newsagent in Caversham. Newsagents are under pressure – like so many businesses – from the relentless rise of Tesco.
Yet Tesco and the rest offer an ersatz service compared with a well-stocked newsagent. You’d be hard pressed to find an obscure hobby or trade magazine in your superstore. By contrast, our village newsagent, The Old Post House in Chalfont St Giles, comes up trumps. And WH Smith seems, at last, to be fighting back: its transformed store in Chester is a delight.
